Our Story

Sound Doctrine, a music group, was founded in 1992 when a dear friend, Richard Ball (one of the founding members), invited the Tuttle brothers (Jeff and Barry) and Gary Duty to his home for a “jam session.” What began as a casual gathering to “pick” eventually evolved into a music ministry that has endured for over three decades.

Throughout the years, the band has experienced personnel changes, but the core purpose of this ministry has remained steadfast. The Bible states in Isaiah 38:20, “The LORD was ready to save me; therefore, we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD.”

Gary Duty, one of the founding members and leader of the group, has composed and arranged a diverse repertoire of “spiritual songs” that primarily comprise our music. These songs are complemented by standard hymns and a few other compositions by various writers.

Barry Tuttle, Jeff Tuttle, Bill Baker, and Tony Duty contribute their musical talents to the group. Barry Tuttle plays the resonator (dobro) guitar and provides vocals, while Jeff Tuttle plays the mandolin and also sings. Bill Baker plays the banjo, and Tony Duty plays the electric bass guitar. Tony is also the pastor of First Baptist Church in Boyne City, Michigan.

Bill Baker is the pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Alexandria, Kentucky. Bill has remained a steadfast friend and a valuable member of the band. Additionally, Bill is a painter and chalk artist who sometimes incorporates his artistic skills into his preaching.

Our mission is to lift up the Lord Jesus Christ to those who have never believed and to teach and admonish believers through our music and preaching (John 12:32, Colossians 3:16 and Titus 2:1).

The foundation of our ministry lies in the precious words of the King James Bible of 1611, the ONLY book that you can hold in your hand that is the inspired and perfectly preserved words of Almighty God for believers today (1 Corinthians 3:10-11). These words are the source of absolute truth that inspire our songs.
